OUTLANDER – MOVIE THEATERS. FINALLY.

Title

Title

Howdy folks. The list of theaters finally came in. Guess they had to find the ones that hadn’t been taken by Mall Cop. I’m hoping there’s something reasonably close to all of you who have asked. (That is, within a 17-hour drive) Myself, I’m off to San Diego to see it. There will be another wave of cities/theaters coming in the near future.

Also, a shout-out to Sonny Bunch of the Washington Times and Charlie Anders of io9.com. Good chatting with you both this afternoon. Hope we didn’t talk your ears off. (But you gotta know you ask a writer a question, he’s going to answer at length.

And a big HI!! to the Houston contingent, Juliann, Sophie and Robert!!

Finally, before the list, here’s the print ad with a fine quote from Guy Haley.

    hey there,

any idea if and when the movie will hit in los angeles? been looking forward to this movie for a long time and will go to san diego if i have to. will it be in theaters for this weekend only or will it last awhile in these cities mentioned above? thanks, hope to get some feedback.

  2. outlanderthemovie Says:

First off, I can’t tell you how happy I am for your enthusiasm. It’s much appreciated. Here’s the scoop tho – I do not know if it will come to Los Angeles. It’s all in the Weinstein’s hands, and as extraordinary as it may sound, they have told us it is simply too expensive to put it in theaters here. If we buck the odds and do well despite no advertising and a poster that doesn’t feature the monster and rely on the positive feedback we’re getting then maybe, just maybe…

Just for being nice, I’m going to post another picture for you. A Viking funeral ship. Hopefully our movie isn’t on board.

  3. How long a movie is in a given theater depends pretty much on how much it averages over the week. If the per screen average is less than 2000 the first week you can pretty much guarantee that it will disapear quickly as anything less means that you barely have enough to cover the cost of the print and the people to run the show…

Maybe I’m oversimpifying but that’s kind of how it works in a nutshell. The better a film does, the longer it hangs around.

What I don’t get is why – with the advent of digital projection – are people like the weinsteins not in there like a dirty shirt? Isn’t a digital copy cheaper to distribute than reels? With the push for 3D isn’t there a ton of digital screens out there right now? Or are they all filled up this weekend too?

  4. What about Toronto, Canada?

  5. For Los Angeles area, maybe consider the Laemmle theater in Pasadena. That’s where I was able to catch Repo! The Genetic Opera.

    (finger’s crossed)

  7. I was hoping to see it was going to be at the Westcott or Palace in Syracuse, NY. Very surprised to see its not in NY at all. I don’t want to wait for the DVD.

  8. Howard McCain is one of the best young writer/directors in Hollywood. His vision and talent are unsurpased. Many of us look forward to seeing “Outlander”.

  9. thank you for your report

  10. thank you for your reports

  11. it would have awesome to see this movie on the big-screen the weinstins drop’d the ball on this one doesint matter it comes out on dvd next week and ill be buying a copy

  12. After viewing this on DVD last night, I was amazed that I had not heard of this movie before seeing it on the shelf at Blockbuster. This movie was better than other movies of the same genre that have been released in recent years. Production value was well above average, casting and acting was awesome, CGI monster & tech effects were believable. I just cannot fathom this not being a commercial success. Why was there not wider release?

  13. Outlander provides a strong picture of Dark Age Europe, and an excellent premise for the epic Beowulf (better even than the movie Beowulf). Characters are believable, setting is accurate (maybe even more so than the 12th century version of the story), special effects are outstanding, and the story is exciting. Shamus Haney’s translation would be a good intro for the serious reader/viewer or even a good follow-up.

Details of this period of history are scant, and the authors have done an excellent job of research. A great movie that deserves to become a classic.

  14. Ok. I saw this movie today. I only learned about it by complete accident!!! Netflix browsing!!! I thought it was AWESOME!! I am ASTONISHED I never heard about this movie, never saw any advertising for it, never saw it listed as a movie playing the local cinemas/theatres in Nashville or anywhere else. I find it completely WIERD that this movie never got ANY billing anywhere except for the limited number of places it was apparently shown. The Weinsteins dropped the ball on this one….sorry. In fact, I would release it again in theaters, BECUASE NO ONE HAS HEARD OF THIS MOVIE (i.e. it would play like a new movie release even now). Best sci-fi action flic I’ve seen in a LONG time!!! Kudos.

  15. Hey Dirk

Just saw Outlander. I liked it a lot, notably finding the script [its original ideas, the psychological credibility, flow and level of detail was what made me sniff out this site], but also the acting, the locations/built scenes and the fight choreography well above average for an action/adventure movie. All of these coming together neatly to suspend my disbelief make the movie very enjoyable, and I’m not all that easy to please, I’d say. So Kudos to all on a job well done. Sad story about the Weinstein marketing calls, hope everybody is all right in spite of it.

My one critisism of the film would be aimed at the action shots. Go tell Howard he needs to practise those some more! ;-D (before you guys hopefully get to shoot the next Conan.)
While I did like the 1:1 choreography, it was often hard to follow what was going on, actionwise, imho due to suboptimal placement of cameras and/or overly darkened scenes. Of course, that is just one guys opinion, but I think I’ve seen better in that regard, and I do like my fights watchable. (an old favorite is BP as Achilles charging up the stairs of Apollos temple in ‘Troy’ which I know well enough by now to see all its unintended clumsiness and imperfection, but for a brightly lit and fastpaced scene I still think it is pretty effing exemplary.)

    Best regards

    Steffen
